Friday, December 1, 2006

Attendees: Marjorie Acevedo, MSMC; Stephanie Ballard, CSUN; Angela Boyd, UCSB; Annie Knight, SJSU-MLIS graduate student; Sophie Lesinska, USC; Judith Samuel, Cal Lutheran; Susan Shapiro, MSMC

1. Introductions:

We opened the meeting with round-robin introductions and were pleased to welcome one new face to the gathering, Annie Knight graduate student from SJSU-MLIS.  Annie is the chair of LISSTEN, the student organization of the SJSU-MLIS graduate program.  She has been chair for the past three years. Annie was invited to attend the DIAL-South meeting by Sophie Lesinska who represented DIAL-South at the LISSTEN Professional Associations Day held on Sunday, Oct. 29 at CSU Fullerton.

2. Announcements:

Sophie represented DIAL-South at the LISSTEN Professional Associations Day held on Sunday, Oct. 29 at CSU Fullerton. She was one of many representatives from all types of library organizations. The event, intended to be a bridge for MLIS students between their coursework and the professional world, also included mock interview panels. Reflecting on the experience, she suggested that DIAL might want to come up with a marketing pitch expressing what the group has to offer. Sophie is forming a Standing Committee for Diversity at USC as a response to the UCLA Diversity Recruitment Summit. (?)

Congratulations to Stephanie, who has had an article published in Searcher: The Magazine for Database Professionals, “Citation Searching”.   She brought in a copy to share with us.

Judith spoke about diversity and social justice programming at California Lutheran University. She is currently arranging a program featuring Nancy Rawls, author of My Jim.

Annie spoke about her role as chair of LISSTEN, the student organization of the SJSU-MLIS program for the past three years. Planning programs such as ones for Banned Books Week has given her a lot of experience of outreach among many other campus groups.

Angela spoke about the active Multi-Cultural Center at UC Santa Barbara. She mentioned other organizations, such as Reforma and APALA, addressing issues relating to the inclusion of LGBT concerns within the diversity platforms.

3. Approval of Meeting Minutes:

4. Programming:

The consensus was for a program arising from and using the energy generated by the UCLA Diversity Summit and JCLC that will address practicalities of diversity recruitment and retention of new librarians. It will be aimed at MLIS students and recent library school graduates, as well as seasoned librarians.

The discussion will form the basis of a morning/afternoon program with one or more panels featuring librarians of diverse backgrounds talking about their professional experiences.  Librarians will be invited from [different ethnic groups] sharing impressions of their first job and interviewing process. The objective will be to communicate “real world” professional experiences from librarians of color.

Sophie volunteered USC as a possible location for the DIAL-South Spring/Summer
Program- probable date: May 18th or 19th, 2007?

The potential panelists may include Judy Weedman, Clara Chu (UCLA) and/or Marla Peppers from Occidental College.

5. New Business:

We discussed launching future collaborations with SCIL in the coming year and increasing attendance to SCIL meetings.

DIAL-South members will think about the “title theme’ of the upcoming program.  We will share ideas via the LISTSERV.

6. Next Meeting:

The next meeting will be held on February 16, 2007 at USC.  Sophie Lesinska will contact members regarding directions and any other details.
