DIAL-South Friday,
August 25, 2006 Attendees: Stephanie Ballard, CSU Northridge;
Claudia Holguin, Harvard Univ.; Sophie Lesinska, USC; Valeria Molteni,
CSU Dominguez Hills; Susan Shapiro, MSMC 1. Announcements Sophie
announced that USC has an opening for an Instruction Coordinator for
the libraries. She also told us that she is on the search committee
for a new Dean of Libraries. Stephanie
brought a job description for the post of Online Services Librarian
at San Diego Mesa College. Over the summer, she was a co-curator of
an exhibit on the Santa Monica Mountains in the CSUN Oviatt Library
lobby. The process of gathering materials involved collaboration with
faculty in the Biology, Geology and Geography Departments at CSUN, as
well as with staff at the L.A. County Museum of Natural History, the
National Park Service and Malibu Creek State Park. It sounds like a
wonderful exhibit and an excellent example of library collaboration
with faculty. Claudia
Holguin, DIAL-South’s Registrar, will be leaving soon for a one-year
archival internship at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Everyone
wishes her well and looks forward to hearing about her experiences when
she visits during the winter holiday break. 2. Approval of Minutes The
minutes were approved and will be posted on the DIAL-South web site. 3. Report on
Summer Program at MOLAA Twenty-four
people attended the DIAL Sunday summer program at the Museum of Latin
American Art. Attendees included three librarians from Orange
Public Library and four children, who were kept busy by a crafts workshop.
We all met for lunch in the café and had an interesting and relaxed
visit. The only downside was missing the docent tour scheduled
for after lunch. The current co-chairs of DIAL-South will include this
program in their annual report to CARL. 4.
Upcoming DIAL-South Election of Officers DIAL-South
will hold its fall election of officers at the next business meeting.
This year, according to the bylaws, the group will elect a new co-chair
for a two year term, replacing Stephanie who has served for two years.
We will also be looking for a new Registrar, who handles program registration
and fees, and a new Secretary. Sophie Lesinska will remain co-chair
for another year, and Judith Samuel will keep the position of Archivist. We
were delighted that Valeria Molteni (CSUDH) will be running for Co-Chair.
An announcement will go to the Dial-South Listserv looking for other
members who might be interested in joining the steering committee. 5. DIAL-South collaboration with SCIL Susan
Luevano and Judith Samuel will attend the next SCIL meeting to be held
on Friday, Sept. 15, at CSU Long Beach. Other DIAL members will attend
if they can. One of the topics on the agenda will be the possibility
of a joint DIAL-South / SCIL program or other collaboration. DIAL-South,
with many members who are also in SCIL, may want to draft a workshop
proposal for the LOEX conference. SCIL
will be sponsoring the next LOEX Conference in San Diego, to be held
on May 4-5, 2007. LOEX is a clearinghouse for library instruction and
information literacy information based at Eastern Michigan University.
The website is: http://www.emich.edu/public 7. UCLA Diversity Summit The
Diversity Recruitment Summit for the Information Professions will be
held at UCLA on Monday, Sept. 18. Its purpose is to generate ideas on
how to recruit a library workforce from under-represented groups. Several
DIAL members will attend and will report back at the next meeting. 8. Program Planning Ideas A
few ideas and themes were suggested, all of which need to be further
discussed and developed at the next business meeting. The themes
are:
9. Next Meeting The
next meeting will be held on either October 6th or 20th at
a central location, to be announced, so we have maximum attendance for
the election of officers. Submitted by Susan Shapiro, DIAL-South Secretary, 2005-2006 |
